In ancient history, the name Teuta remains associated with one of the most well-known figures of the Illyrian world. A queen who took over the kingdom after the death of King Agron and appeared during a period when Illyria played an important role in the Adriatic region. After Agron's death in 231 BC, Teuta took on the role of regent. According to ancient sources, she continued the policy of expanding the kingdom and maintaining Illyrian influence in the Adriatic. But the name Teuta became especially well known for her clash with Rome. In 229 BC, the First Illyrian War began, a conflict that marked a significant moment in relations between Rome and the Illyrian kingdom. After the war, Teuta was forced to accept a peace treaty and limit her control over Illyrian territories. However, the history of Teuta is not just the story of a conflict. It remains a symbol of a period when the Adriatic was a space where trade, cities, territories, and political powers intertwined. Even today, her figure continues to live on through the history, archaeology, and various traditions of the Adriatic. Over the centuries, many stories and legends have also been created about Teuta, turning her into one of the most well-known female figures of the Illyrian world.
